{random} characters & a few days...

i love planning my wedding. it's fun that i get to make every little decision on a day that reflects ..us. but that's just it. i have to make every little decision and the stress of it all has finally caught up with me. so i need a few days. i will still read all of my favorite wedding blogs, look thru the beautiful magazines and dream about the day everyday. just for a few days i will not make a decision on anything wedding related. it's a wedding vacation, if you will...so..about this book i'm reading..

on chesil beach by ian mcewan. i couldn't wait to pick up a copy of this book. i had read somewhere that it was about a young couple on their wedding night...in a time when couples had waited to .. you know..."do it" until they got married. i thought it would be interesting to read the different points of view...her side...his side...and then to live thru it with them.

sigh.

but i hate it. he is just so...boring. and she is just so...ick. i don't know... i find myself skipping paragraphs. just to be done with it. i have never done that. but i'm going to finish it dog-gone-it. because it was $15 and that is $15 i could have spent toward the wedding...so i will finish it. and then i will give it away. because i feel, so far, that this book has no presence on my bookshelf.

perhaps you think i am being harsh. maybe. but once you have read those wonderful books that have haunted you...like when i was a young girl, i read bridge to terabithia, where the red fern grows, and to kill a mockingbird. those stories will forever be a part of my life. those characters became my friends and i cared about who they were and what was going to happen to them. as i got older, fewer books had that effect on me. until recently...

if you haven't yet read The Time Traveler's Wife then you are crazy. for serious. i am not a sci-fi kind of girl either...but this story moved me in a way that just won't leave my soul. i read it earlier this year and i still lay awake sometimes thinking about henry & claire. i miss them terribly. they were like dear friends of mine that i feel..have died or something. they were the most incredible people i've ever met. i want them back in my life..but i'm not quite yet ready to pick up that book again. it was too painful.

so..on with chesil beach. woohoo. i'll let you know how it goes...

I loved the Time Traveler's Wife as well, but have to admit I listened to it on CD during a long car ride as opposed to actually reading it.

Very moving. So romantic!

The time traveler's wife was an outstanding book. I read it two years ago and I am sooooo in love with it. I heard they were making a movie- it's described as in post-production on IMDB. I am interested to see it for sure!
